Happy Summer! Most of you have wrapped up your Spring season
and are either headed to camp, the beach, or summer ball...so
how'd it go this year? We're always looking for kids and coaches
to send us updates (and pictures!) on how their season went. Drop us a note
This issue has a special story with an inside look at at first-year student-
athlete at the IMG Baseball Academy in Bradenton, Fla. Jake Waxler, 14,
of Lithia, Fla., outside of Tampa, gives our Jimmi Adair a personal tour of
what his day looks like (we'll give you a clue: wake early and go ALL day)
and how he's adapted to such a different lifestyle that your ordinary teenager.
Check it out starting on page 24.
About 13 years ago, our Triple A Squad / Rookie Club columnist Don
Marsh wrote some good advice for our youngers readers on the value of
never forgetting the basics to hitting by using a batting tee to help correct any
quirks in your swing. His advice was guided by then Major Leaguer, soon to
be Hall of Famer, and now the late Tony Gwynn. We remember Tony in this
issue by republishing that story that ran in 2001. Check out "Tony on the
Tee" in the Triple A Squad story on page 8.
Our rememberances of Gwynn don't stop there. Another longtime
columnist to Junior Baseball -- Theo Chen, who pens our Collector's Corner
-- takes a moment to recall his personal meetings with Gwynn at card shows.
His generosity and kindness are some of the ways Chen remembers him.
Gwynn suspects his salivary gland cancer that took his life was probably
caused by the chewing tobacco he had used during his career.
As Chen puts it: "Losing someone of Gwynn's caliber is always sad, but
perhaps some good can result if young baseball players realize that chewing
tobacco is not just an addictive, nasty habit, but one that can eventually kill
you." Coaches, please take some time with your kids to ensure they're aware
of the dangers of this bad habit.
